About Live Wind

Live Wind is continually evolving based on user feedback and suggestions — thank you to everyone who has contributed ideas and improvements. The website has recently been enhanced with BOM rain radar imagery (visible on the map) and high-resolution wind forecast data (visible in the wind graphs) for most capital cities. If you'd like to get in touch with feedback or suggestions (for example, adding new weather stations from yacht clubs or proposing new features), please email: chris.ackland@gmail.com.

Welcome to Live Wind! This website provides real-time wind observation data from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and other sources including Ports Victoria. It also displays sea surface and water temperatures for over 140 locations around Australia.

Most data is updated every 10 minutes and includes wind speed, wind direction, gusts, air temperature, and apparent temperature from over 720 locations nationwide.

You can use Live Wind to:

To get started, zoom into an area on the map to view live wind observations for that location. You can zoom in and out to explore conditions across different regions.

The Bureau of Meteorology provides frequent updates from over 724 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) across Australia and surrounding offshore islands. These observations are visualised on an interactive map covering the entire country.

Live data is also sourced from critical locations within Ports Victoria, including Point Lonsdale, Point Nepean, Hovell Pile, Webb Dock, South Wharf, Breakwater Pier, and Melbourne VTS — helping mariners and water users stay informed in the Port Phillip Bay region.

Sandringham Yacht Club weather data is also available. Due to factors such as sensor elevation and nearby structures, readings may vary slightly from nearby BOM stations.

The map includes several optional layers:

Please use this website at your own risk. Always verify conditions from multiple sources and avoid operating in weather that exceeds your skills, experience, or equipment limitations.
